Uğur Karataş was born in Bitlis in 1991. After graduated from Izmir Dokuz Eylül University Painting Department in 2015, completed his master’s degree in fine arts in the workshop of Heike Kati Barath at Hochschule für Künste Bremen between 2019-2021.

Uğur Karataş’s paintings are characterized by his intense exploration of the possibilities of abstract painting. The exclusion of both an overall composition and central leitmotifs situates his paintings in the modernist tradition of allover painting. Grid-like structures strictly organize the pictorial action, highlighting an extensive structure off-center that has the potential to extend beyond the edges of the images. The brightly colored weavings of free-standing structures create depthless spaces that appear as self-referential landscapes in their formation.

The artist calls these structures “fractal landscapes”. While these works create the impression of a painting covered with a surface, they are actually compositions produced during the monotype printing production process. The dilemma between production and result, form and material, represents a central motif in Karataş’s practice. His paintings appear as plastic bags and packaging materials; These materials are processed and subjected to a complex process that creates relationships and tensions between colors and tones, textures and surfaces.

Uğur Karataş, who has held exhibitions in Bremen, Berlin, Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, continues his life and work in Germany.
