Şeyma Barut Portrait

Şeyma Barut’s artistic practice reconsiders the subject–object–space relationship through the axes of gender, belonging, and identity. Addressing the tension-filled relationship the individual establishes with their physical and social environment, the artist questions the visible and invisible effects of societal norms built upon gender roles. Combining figurative narrative with strong spatial compositions, Barut transforms ordinary moments of daily life into narratives carrying political and psychological layers. Her works make visible social acceptances, identity construction, and forms of emancipation through the delicate balance she establishes between individual experience and collective memory.

(b. 1987, Istanbul) Şeyma Barut graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting in 2017. Focusing on figurative painting practice during her education, the artist participated in various group exhibitions and continued her production in the field of contemporary painting. Having taken part in numerous group exhibitions across Turkey to date, Barut continues her work in her studio in Istanbul.
